Welcome to World Baby Names!

World Baby Names is a new website that uses government data to provide comprehensive forename popularity trends and statistics for different countries and regions around the globe. Search for a name to see how its popularity has changed over time, or view tables showing the most popular names each year.
Where available names data has been used to produce the following statistics for each name:
Rank: The position of a name when the list of names for a given year has been placed in order from highest count to lowest count. Names with an equal count have been given the same rank, and placed in alphabetical order in popularity tables.
Change in rank: The difference in ranks of a name between a given year and a previous year.
Count: The number of boys or girls given a particular name in a given year.
Relative change in count: The relative difference in counts between a given year and a previous year. The relative change is not the actual difference between counts, but gives a better idea of the change from a previous year by taking into account the different total number of births for each year.
Percentage of total male/female births: The number of boys or girls given a particular name in a given year as a proportion of the total number of male or female births in that year.
Relative change in count and percentage of total male/female births statistics are only available for years where number of births data is available.
Names data is produced differently in different locations so not all statistics are available for all areas. For example, in some locations only name ranks are given and not counts. Comprehensive source information is given detailing how the data has been produced and which statistics are available.
Number of names: Information about the total number of different names in each location, as well as number of female, male and unisex names. More names statistics will be added in future.
Number of births: Information about number of female and male births per year in each location, used to calculate relative change in count and percentage of total male/female births statistics.
Data has so far been added for England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom. In future data will be added for Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States and many more countries. Follow World Baby Names on social media for updates and check back often!Site News
